The Iron Girl Lake Las Vegas Olympic Triathlon is complete. I am an IRON GIRL!

IMG_5447

Friday, my sweet friend Heather and I left my house around 10am to road trip it out to Vegas! Originally the Hubby and RJ were going to come out with me, but after some thought, we thought it best that they hang back and make it out for my next event!

IMG_5365

When we arrived at the Westin Lake Las Vegas, we were in awe of the beautiful mountains and scenic view! I never knew there was this side of Vegas!

IMG_5386

First things first! We went to check in and get my bib number and hit up the Expo!

IMG_5367

The expo was very small, but had some really cute women specific booths. I really like the Tough Chik booth and ended up buying my first visor!

IMG_5369

At 4pm there was a great chat about the course. It was so helpful to hear from the race coordinator about what to expect. When I heard that we would be doing two laps of everything, I almost thought about switching to the Sprint. Winking smile

IMG_5382

Then we headed up to our room! I have to say this may be the best view from any Westin Hotel I have EVER visited!

IMG_5391

After we settled into our room, we took the hotel shuttle to a few of the restaurants and shops just a few miles down the road. It was so nice not to have to worry about driving or getting lost and be able to have someone to pick us up from the hotel and bring us back. We decided on a local Italian Restaurant called Luna Rossa. Honestly, it was some of the worst service I have ever had so I wouldn’t recommend going there, but the food was pretty good. I ordered the balsamic salmon with mixed veggies and potatoes. Salmon is always my GO-TO pre-race meal if I can find it!

IMG_5418

Then we went back to our rooms to settle into our HEAVENLY beds and call it an early night. I laid out all my gear so at 5am I wouldn’t have to think much. I loved that we were staying at the Westin because all I had to do was walk downstairs and suit up!

IMG_5425

At 5am my alarm went off and I slowly moved toward the coffee maker, made a cup of joe and enjoyed a whole wheat egg muffin with almond butter and banana.

IMG_5433

At first I went downstairs to the transition area and put all my gear out! I had one major fail when I forgot to unhook the Velcro on my cycling shoes for an easy transition, but everything else was fine. I laid my towel down and put everything I needed on top. I had my running shoes, helmet with gloves and sunglasses inside, long sleeve shirt in case it was freezing for the bike ride and finally my bib number, which I had on a belt.

IMG_5434

Then I went back up to my room (a one minute walk) to put on my awesome Aqua Sphere wet suit! I was so excited when they sent this to me to try out and a little nervous that it might not fit., but if fit perfectly! It was super easy to put on and throughout the swim I felt light and WARM! Thank goodness because the water was 62 degrees!

IMG_5437

At 6:15am, I was back at the transition area and walked to the start line.

IMG_5441

The race started at 6:40 on the dot! I loved that we got to watch the sunrise. A sunrise swim is my favorite! I jumped in a little before the start to warm up. It always helps if I do a couple strokes before the race. It helps me get rid of some of the nervousness.

I have done two sprint Tri’s and a Half Iron Man Tri, but this was my first Olympic Tri and my first race at Iron Girl Lake Las Vegas as well so I had no idea what to shoot for as far as time!

IMG_5445

Then we were OFF! Here is the thing that is mentally hard about this course. We had to do everything twice for the Olympic distance. For the swim, we swam out to the red buoy, came out of the water, ran across the start line and jumped back into the water to do it again. Getting out of the water was mentally challenging. It was easy to think I was done, but I had to do the lap again. Same with the bike and run. The good thing was that you knew what was coming and how to pace yourself.

image

My swim was ok and felt pretty good. When I jumped out the water, I had to run quite a distance to the transition area on pavement and so my first transition time was SLOW because my hands were so cold that I had a hard time getting my suit off and putting on my socks and gloves. But when I finally got everything on, I ran with my bike and took off up the SUPER STEEP FIRST HILL!

Swim: 33:08

image

Transition #1: 04:06

image

Bike: 1:34:30

image

image

The first 8 miles of the bike were all uphill. I didn’t have a watch (My battery died. It’s a long story.), but I used my MapMyRun App on my iPhone. I tried to stay between a 10-11MPH pace up the hills and 15-18MPH on the flat parts. Coming down the hills is where I hoped to pick up some time! I was going 30MPH at one point and had to put on the brakes a little. Once again when we got back to the transition area, we had to take off back up the hill for LAP #2! The best part was that the finish was all downhill. I liked the bike course (hills and all), but I just wasn’t as fast as I hope to be on the bike. I saw some beautiful views and didn’t have any flat tires, so all was good!

image

Transition #2: MUCH faster, 2:29!

image

Run: 50:46

image

Oh how I love jumping off my bike and hitting the pavement! Running is my event! My transition was a lot faster this time because all I had to do was throw on my shoes, bib number, visor and go! The first two miles, once again, were straight uphill! My feet were so NUMB! It took them some time to come to life, but when they did, I took stride as fast as I could without killing myself. Mile 3 was downhill and then we had to do it all again. Some of the hills were so steep that women were walking, but I kept telling myself one baby step in front of the other. No matter how slow I was going, I was running! I really hated that I didn’t have a watch to tell me my pace, but at the same time it was kind of nice just to run!

The last two miles I prayed and enjoyed every minute of the race. No matter what my time was I was so happy that I had the health to do the race! There are not a lot of spectators throughout the entire course, but when I came in to the finish there were a ton of people screaming and cheering. When I saw my friend Heather, I sprinted, threw my hands up and crossed the finish line with a smile!

IMG_5456

Finish time: 3:04:59, 24th overall and 5th in my age division! Not bad for my first Olympic!

IMG_5451

GEAR:

I loved my Saucony Guide 7’s and I felt like I was running on AIR! They come out in November folks! I really like the color too. I am kind of obsessed with teal blue and pink these days. I also really liked my Danskin Tri-Suit that a friend gave me! I loved the one piece for a short Tri. I did wear a sports bra under it but didn’t chafe at all! I also wore my new Oakley’s and although this pair is super cute, I wasn’t a fan of them for racing. I need a lighter pair for sure!

IMG_5452

FEED ME!!!! After the race, I quickly showered and headed to the STRIP in Vegas for lunch! I was craving some yummy tacos, margaritas and guacamole! We went to the Fashion Mall and found El Segundo Sol! Best Margs and Mahi Mahi tacos EVER!

IMG_5470

The homemade GUAC was to die for!

IMG_5466

The rest of the day was spent shopping! The Fashion Mall is HUGE!

IMG_5490

For dinner we got all dressed up to hit up town, but then ended up just going to the Westin hotel restaurant, eating dinner and bringing wine and dessert back to our rooms! We enjoyed being in our yoga pants and watching the World Series a little more than dancing the night away.

IMG_5502

It was such an amazing weekend and I was so blessed to have had the support of a dear friend! Next year I must get a group of girls together to do this race with me! Iron Girl is so organized and everyone on the course was encouraging and friendly! I can not wait to do another!

Thanks Iron Girl for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing TRI!

Also, thank you Westin for letting me experience your hotel as an athlete. I may never choose any another hotel to stay at again.

And finally, thank you to Juice It Up for the fuel to get me to and from Vegas!

I have all kinds of fun stuff to tell you all, but for now I have to jump into bed and get ready for my 6:30am Iron Girl Vegas Tri start!!! I am incredibly excited to be at the Westin Lake Las Vegas Hotel this weekend. Ever since the Westin Concierge job interviews, I have been sold on traveling to Westin Hotels for all RACES!

IMG_5380

The Lake Las Vegas location is no exception to all of their other amazing locations! Check out the view from our room.

IMG_5405

I can not wait to jump into this Heavenly Bed!!! These beds are perfect for tired athletes like me 😉

IMG_5406

…and of course enjoy the STARBUCKS in the morning!

IMG_5400

I love that I can trust that if I forgot anything at all (i.e. running shoes, shirt, pants, etc.) that the Westin Hotel would hook me up with a pair. I love the RunWestin Gear Lending Program. It really put my mind at ease for this race.

CHEERS FRIENDS! See you soon!

IMG_5417

QUESTION:

I will be following most of Tim Holland’s “The 12-Week Athlete” Training Plan again, just like I did for my Half Ironman. I love that the book has a plan for every level of athlete. I am going to stick to the Intermediate Olympic Distance plan with a little bit of my own flare.

What my plan consists of:

  • Swimming (2 times a week)
  • Cycling  (2 times a week)
  • Running (3 times a week)
  • GPP (4 times a week)
  • Yoga (once a week)

image

image

image

You can see it more clearly HERE. I have never done this distance of a Tri before, so my #1 goal is to have fun training and finish well.

I LOVE TRIATHLONS so much and I am pretty sure this might be my favorite distance! After this, I will have done every distance besides a full Ironman which I will do one day! I know in the Olympics they get anywhere from 1 hour & 45 minutes to 2 hours finishing times… ya I am aiming for a “3 hours or less” kind of time.

A 30 minute swim, 1 hour 30 minutes bike, 1 hour run. We shall see.

IMG_9376

I am so excited to get back in the pool and riding my bike more constantly. I will be doing TUESDAY TRI updates over the next 11 weeks in hopes to encourage you all to get the passion and desire to do one too!

ORANGEMAN 70.3 Race {Recap} https://www.bobbimccormick.com/orangeman-70-3-race-recap/ https://www.bobbimccormick.com/orangeman-70-3-race-recap/#comments Tue, 27 Sep 2011 23:04:30 +0000 http://www.bobbimccormick.com/?p=22978 Hey friends, sorry for the delay I have been taking a much needed break 🙂

This weekend I swam 1.2 miles in the ocean, biked 56 miles through Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano and ran 13.1 miles back to the coast. One of the most amazing and brutal experiences of my life!!!

IMG_9160-91

Sunday morning my alarm was set for 4:00am, good thing I have been getting up early for weeks now that it didn’t even seem that early! I made a cup of coffee and tried to have some toast with PB, but I was so nervous I couldn’t really eat but one.

IMG_1131

We made it the transition area at 5:30am and thankfully had not problem finding a parking spot. I love organization, so setting up my transition was a lot of fun 🙂 I had my bike stuff one one side, my running stuff on the other and left some room to dry my feet off on. Wasn’t sure how this was all going to work, but my goal was to have fun so I was not stressed about taking too much time in the transition area.

IMG_1142 IMG_1141

A lady came around and tagged my arm and leg with my number and my age. I felt like a real tri-athlete 🙂

IMG_1138

I put my wet suit on and it was actually pretty easy, thanks to some great tips from the owner and friends! I slathered my legs with body glide and applied a generous layer on my neck because that is what everyone says chafes the worse. I then started mingling with the other tri-athletes and met a girl named Christy and we immediately hit it off!

IMG_9068-1

We decided to take a quick dip in the water and warm up… didn’t think I would be able to do that it helped take the edge off for a sec 😉

IMG_9069-2

The water was great!!!

IMG_9070-3

Low tide.

IMG_9071-4

In we went!

IMG_9072-5

Then I started getting really nervous.

IMG_9078-11

The Swim

IMG_9080-13

All the ladies were in the purple caps, which was easy to spot. We were all starting at 7:03 right after the first wave in.

IMG_9084-17

Before I knew it the gun went off and we were off! I couldn’t tell you which one I was 😉

IMG_9091-24

I thought that the swim was going to be my most challenging event because I have a huge fear of swimming in the ocean, but it was AMAZING!! I got right in, missed the tide and started head down and stroked away. I took long deep breaths and took my time. I didn’t want to get anxious and lose my breathing pattern so I kept my head down and swam away.

Every time I put my head up to do a site check it got loud and crazy!!! I got kicked a couple times, but nothing major and the reef scared me a few times, but I was playing cool 🙂

I took one stroke in front of the next and really felt amazing the whole swim (minus the reef that kept freaking me out).

IMG_9092-25

Final Swim Time: 36:54.1 (1.2mi) WOOT! I was aiming for 40 minutes!

Transition 1

Before I knew it, I was running to T1!! We had to run up a hill (the theme of this whole race) for a couple of minutes (that was in the T1 count) and I didn’t have sailor legs!

IMG_9102-33

I was told to leave my cap and goggles on so that I would have both hands to take my suit off while I ran! I am so glad they told me that, because I probably would have ripped them off and then wouldn’t have had a free hand to unzip my suit with.

IMG_9104-35

I first took my arms out and took my suit down to my hips and took off running while many others were walking. I was ready to get on my bike!

IMG_9105-36

IMG_9106-37

IMG_9107-38

IMG_9109-40

My first transition was quick and easy. When I got to my bike, their was a stripper there so I laid flat on my back and threw my legs in the air so she could help me get mu suit off. Then I  threw on my helmet, then gloves, (fuel was already on my bike), glasses and lastly socks and shoes! I didn’t bother with water on my feet I just put my shoes on got on my bike!

IMG_9115-46

Transition 1 time: 4:38.8

…AND I was off to the hardest bike ride I would ever ride!

IMG_9119-50 IMG_9120-51 IMG_9126-57

The Bike

Here I GO!!!

image

As you can see from the map the ride starts with a hill and then at mile 6 you ride up 22 more miles of hill!!! A total of 3,123 elevation gain!!! I just took it one mile at a time. It was actually a really pretty ride and everyone was so friendly to talk to, I threw all my competitiveness  out the window and just rode…

image

After mile 6: I really focused on pushing and pulling. The hill was BRUTAL!!!! I wasn’t cursing at it though, I was just doing it! I also was making sure I fueled properly, I didn’t want to cramp up or flat out. As soon as I got on the bike I drank some Heed (Hammer Product) and had a few shot blocks. I also made sure to drink every other mile and had a big bite of my Cliff Bar every hour.

At mile 28: we turned around and headed back in! I was flying, at one point I hit 35mph!! I made up for lost time and it felt great to give my legs a break. I didn’t give my legs a break that much, because I wanted them to know that they still needed to work 🙂 I wasn’t racing, this was going to be fun and I wanted to enjoy every minute of it!

At mile 50 I was jumping inside with joy, a personal record distance for me!!!! My legs  were not really hurting, except my BACK WAS KILLING!! I tried to do some cat cows on the bike and sat up as much as possible, but nothing was working so I decided to recognize the pain and move on! Funny thing is, my lower back has NEVER hurt on any ride or run before. It must have been the hill.

At mile 53: There was a short super steep hill!!!! There were people getting off their bikes and walking. I got up out of my saddle and just powered it up the whole way!!! Then it was down hill from there!

At mile 54-56: It was flat and down hill, I was cruising an easy 17mph! I didn’t go any faster then that because I needed to keep my legs alive for the run! Then I started to get hungry!

There were six water stops the whole rid and I only took a couple sips of Gatorade at the last one. I ended up drinking two full water bottles that I brought and and eating a pack of shock blocks and one cliff bar through the whole ride. I should have maybe had one more 1/2 of bar.

I then saw the last tunnel and Hubby at the end of it!!! YAY!

IMG_9133-64

I was delighted!

IMG_9134-65

IMG_9135-66

IMG_9136-67

Hey BABE!

IMG_9137-68

Bike time: 3:51:46.7 (56 mi) For the hill that I climbed I was proud of this time!!

Transition 2

I dismounted off my bike and raced as fast I could to the transition area. I tried to make my Garmin set for the run, but I couldn’t figure it out (borrowed it from a friend). I decided to forget it and threw my bike shoes off, running shoes on, running bib on, and helmet off! It was time to do what I love, RUN!

Transition 2 Time: 3:01.9—> faster then the first!

The Run

I was a little nervous about how my legs would feel after the bike, since I did only one brick workout! But surprisingly as soon as my feet hit the ground I took off!!! My Garmin wasn’t tracking right, so I have no idea how fast my first mile was but my legs felt great!!!

IMG_9138-69

The running course was on a 7 mile loop that we did twice (ya that’s right it was a 14.2 mile run…oops).

IMG_9142-73

My first loop I was in love with! Everyone was cursing the hills, but I am a hill runner so to me it was my comfort zone! I had my water with Heed in it, so I didn’t need to stop for water, but I did have some oranges and a few more shot blocks!

image

IMG_9143-74

I knew that the last 2 miles would be down hill, so I powered through the rest of the run! Since we couldn’t run with music :(  I had to keep myself occupied somehow, so you know what I did? I prayed for every person in my family, I prayed for every friend I could think of and I prayed for those that were in the race!!! It was the most amazing run of my life!!

IMG_9144-75

The last 3 miles I decided to be “that” runner!!! I cheered on every person I ran by, I said every running mantra I knew, the personal trainer / bootcamp instructor came out in me!! I had one guy who was walking and decided to run, he said I was just the motivation he needed!

IMG_9145-76

Then I could see the finish line, I thought I would hate that it was two loops, but I didn’t. I knew where each hill was and I knew where I had to conserve energy so when the end came I knew exactly where to PUSH IT!

IMG_9147-78 IMG_9148-79

I saw the finish line (which we had to run through twice) and so many thoughts went through my head, I am doing it, I am completing my first HIM, I am alive, I didn’t get eaten by a shark, I didn’t get a flat, I didn’t fall of my bike, I didn’t walk, I didn’t burn out, I didn’t stop trying, but I DID CROSS THE FINISH LINE!!!!

IMG_9152-83

I sprinted so hard…

IMG_9153-84

…gave it all I had…

IMG_9154-85

…and rejoiced as I crossed over my last timing mat!

IMG_9155-86

I am a Half IRON-WOMAN!!!

IMG_9156-87

Grabbed my metal and immediately saw HUBBY!!!! I was as emotional as I thought I would be. I was even proud that my body was able to push through one of the hardest physical challenges of my life!!

IMG_9158-89

Run time: 2:08 (13.1 miles)

Total time: 6:49:20.8 <—!!!!!!!! Under 7 hours 🙂

I quickly ran to Hubby gave him a hug and was so excited to be DONE!!!

12 weeks of intense training and many hours of sweat and tears and it was finished!

It took me a minute to gather my thoughts and then the pain set in. It wasn’t as bad as any fast marathon I have done, but my back and legs started screaming! I quickly grabbed my compression shorts and socks and threw them on as fast as possible!!

While I changed Hubby went and got me food I took two bites, but I was not hungry from GREASY pizza!

IMG_1148

We got all my geared packed up and headed to find some REAL food as fast as possible! I was really craving Jamba Juice, but knew I needed more! So we hit up Pei Wei where I devoured a plate of Chicken Curry and Chicken Lettuce Wraps!!! I look exhausted!

image

The past 48 hours I have been on a runners/NOW TRI-ATHLETE HIGH!!! I can explain to you all how amazing this race was, even though it was brutal I can not wait to do another. I think I might even say that I loved it more then any marathon I have ever done (maybe 😉 ). I never hit a wall and I never wanted to quit, NEVER!!!

So what have I been doing ever since???

Brunch with friends… Getting my hair did.. Getting rid of my ugly feet… Date night with Hubby at Ikea and BJ’s… and RESTING!!!!

IMG_1208 IMG_1175 IMG_1213
IMG_1189 IMG_1210 IMG_1206

What’s next?? You will have to wait till my next post to find out!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOVE AND ENCOURAGEMENT, YOU ALL ROCK!!!!

Hardest Ride Ever https://www.bobbimccormick.com/hardest-ride-ever/ https://www.bobbimccormick.com/hardest-ride-ever/#comments Sun, 11 Sep 2011 02:55:13 +0000 http://www.bobbimccormick.com/?p=22551 Today I took on one of me greatest fears, riding my bike up to Oak Glen!!

It’s over 3,400 elevation raise!!

20110910-064528.jpg

I woke up at 5:30am (sleeping in time now days) and had some coffee and PB+Toast, before I embarked on the adventure!!

I always thought people were crazy for doing this ride because it’s all up hill, but when I need to get in 3 1/2 hour bike ride and my friends were going to be doing it, I thought what the heck!

20110910-065508.jpg

I never knew I could push myself so hard!!! The climb was so intense. I kept telling myself “push, pull, push, pull” trying to stay focused was really hard. I am pretty sure this was the most I have war sweated on a bike ride EVER!

20110910-071102.jpg

I was so happy to see the Oak Glen sign and turn around and FLY down hill, which was actually kind of scary!!!

20110910-072927.jpg

I ate my whole pack of shot blocks, half a cliff bar, two bottles of water and a bottle of Gatorade during the ride!! I was so hungry when I finished but not famished!

Oh and check out my new Zoot Tri-Outfit! I got it this week at REI for sale! I wanted to try it out on this ride to see if it will work and loved it!

20110910-073826.jpg

The top has a great shelf top sports bra and two pockets on the side for easy access. The shorts are lightly padded with two pockets on the sides too!! I was afraid the shirt might ride up, but it didn’t move at all! I am going to wear it tomorrow on my long run and see how it feels 🙂

After our 3.5 hour (42) mile bike ride I rushed off to work where I ate 2 amazing meals, packed with protein!

Lunch

20110910-074219.jpg

And dinner!

20110910-074354.jpg

Oh and believe me I had dessert!!!! Root beer float heaven 🙂

20110910-074753.jpg

Working Saturdays aren’t so bad when you get to enjoy friends and this view!!

20110910-075006.jpg

20110910-075056.jpg

Time to snuggle up with these two. How cute is this!!??

Farmers Market Scramble {Recipe} https://www.bobbimccormick.com/farmers-market-scramble/ https://www.bobbimccormick.com/farmers-market-scramble/#comments Fri, 09 Sep 2011 17:47:39 +0000 http://www.bobbimccormick.com/?p=22539 Woooooohooooooo!

Let’s all do the happy Friday dance!!!

Well it’s really only like Wednesday for me, but after Sunday I will be on vacation for 7 days! A bunch of friends and us are going camping in Zion, Utah. So stoked!!

20110909-102925.jpg

This morning I taught a killer bootcamp with cones and bands. Felt good to mix it up! After class I got in a 8 mile speedy tempo run with Val. Good thing she was with me or I might have turned around at 6 miles!

20110909-103151.jpg

As you can see we sweated off 10 pounds!! I was so hungry during the run (might have been the 4:30am wake up call) and sprinted to the end for food!!

20110909-103307.jpg

I have found that Zone Bars for me have a good balance of carbs and protein to fuel my body. They give me energy and keep my satisfied. Also, I am not a huge Gatorade lover, but with the heat, I really crave it.

After the run, Val and I swam 1,400 yds in this beautiful pool! It’s a local gym I bought a month pass for my training!

20110909-103702.jpg

It was a great swim! I heart Tri-Training 🙂 When I finally got home, I made a Farmers Market Veggie Scramble (aka our backyard).

20110909-103924.jpg

Farmers Market Scramble

INGREDIENTS:

Tomato chopped
One small Red Onion chopped
Basil
Green Bell Pepper chopped
Red Pepper chopped
Banana Pepper chopped
Spinach (handful)
3 free range eggs
1 tbsp butter
Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Mix eggs and veggies. Put 1 tbsp butter in skillet add in mixture. Scramble for about 3-5 minutes, enjoy!

20110909-104439.jpg

Off to work!

Question:
What is one way you get protein in, in your diet?
