GPP Vs. CrossFit

Morning friends!

Loved all the wonderful comments on my “Why do you Workout?” post. Loved that most of your answers were all valid and that you all love to workout for health and balance. It’s so interesting what the world tells us is ‘healthy’ and what is truly ‘healthy’.

Here is another video about what GPP is and answering what I think is the hottest question is…

How is GPP different from CrossFit?

What does GPP stand for:
General Physical Preparedness. GPP believes the only worthy reason to exercise and eat right is so that we can lead richer, fuller lives. Lives not limited by capacity and/or self-induced disease.

“At GPP, we realize that health isn’t about who the fittest person in the world is. It isn’t about who can lift the most weight, run the fastest, or obtain the highest work capacity imaginable. These things have no meaning. They serve no purpose.

Instead, get your workout in and go home. Go be a human. Do things that interest/edify you. Let your exercise enable you to contribute to your family, your community and/or society in more positive ways.

Staying at the gym and pounding out more workouts, so that tomorrow you’ll have more capacity to perform even more working out, so that then, you will be able to do yet ANOTHER even more difficult workout, only serves the workout. It can also become a black hole of intention, focus and purpose.  This black hole is filled with everything which is opposite of health.”

What is the goal of GPP?
For everyone to achieve optimal health. To be able to do the things you love, like running!

What is Optimal Health?
GPP believes that optimal health is the perfect balance of the following six things:

1. Mental
2. Social
3. Emotional
4. Spiritual
5. Financial
6. Physical

Physical being the conduit. It is the base of optimal health. When you are physically fit you become more mentally fit, when you are physically fit, you become more emotionally fit… and so on.

What is the mission of GPP?
(MISSION)
1. Reap Benefits (of working out): happiness, strong, healthy
2. Avoid Pitfalls (of life): sick, diseased, weakness, unhealthy

What is the mandate of GPP?
Minimalism:  Do what it takes and not one thing more! We do so we can be. Be efficient and effective.

What is the difference between GPP and CrossFit?
This is up for discussion 🙂 I think one of the biggest differences I see so far is that CrossFit does not isolate muscles, where GPP does. I think they are very similar on so many levels and I think at the end of the day a lot of CrossFit folks are doing the mission of GPP. Is one better then the other? Not really… but for me I like the GPP philosophy which is more aligned with my fitness goals and positivity on life.

Questions:
So now that you have heard a bit about GPP, what differences do you see from other programs out there compared to GPP?

  1. Loved watching your video and getting a better understanding of what GPP is. Quick question, if we aren’t near their gyms, can we still do their workouts at home? How can we be a part of it if we aren’t close to their gym? Thanks so much!!!

    1. of course!!!!

  2. loving these videos and posts Bobbi! I know ours have been similar, but I think we knew that would kind of happen. I’m doing a CF vs GPP post on Monday I hope you don’t mind. Love u girl

  3. Thanks for defining the difference. I have been doing a little research on GPP and it looks awesome! I think I’ll try some of their workouts next week. I always love a little change up in my routine.

  5. very interesting. GPP sounds like something I’d love. I love their approach to fitness!

  6. love it!! and love what GPP is all about!!!

  7. I really like the idea of GPP. I think it’s great to remember why you are working out in the first place. I think we can get caught up in reaching some elusive fitness goal or some huge amount of weight we want to be able to lift but in the end it’s all about keeping your body healthy.

On the other hand, I do think it’s great to have a fitness goal and strive to reach for it. It gives you another reason to go to the gym, go for a run, pop that dvd in, etc. Sometimes, we need more than just being healthy as a motivation. I think we just have to be careful to not damage our bodies in the pursuit of those goals.

Thanks for informing us about GPP! I will definitely be looking more into it!

  8. LOVED this breakdown! It definitely helped me better understand GPP – I may just need to jump on the bandwagon! 🙂
